Statistics on Media Coverage of Weblogs

Cameron Marlow, an MIT grad student, has completed a comprehensive analysis on the coverage of weblogs in the popular press. He has some pretty important takeaways for PR pros:

1) The number of articles published that mention weblogs peaked in April 2004 at 296

2) The term is slowly becoming part of our vernacular. Journalists don't need to provide nearly as much context as they did in 1999

3) While the number of articles exclusively about weblogs is on the decline, stories only tangentially related to weblogs are on the rise

4) Most of the media attention has been focused on MovableType and Blogger, while three of the more popular tools (LiveJournal, DiaryLand, Xanga) lag by a large amount.
